My vision tunneled, speech became slurred and I had an intense nauseous feeling in my stomach. With every heartbeat the pain in my head throbbed. It was an intense pain, that seem to be at the center of my head and radiated out to the left eye. All I wanted to do was curl up in a ball and hide in the darkest, quietest place. During my teens and into my thirties I had migraine headaches, and  this was the most intense episode of migraines that I had experienced.

Migraine headaches can be crippling. The intensity of the pain can be extreme, to the point of being immobilizing. Often these type of headache is accompanied by other symptoms including nausea, dislike for bright lights and strong odors, and sensitivity to loud noises. Migraines are three times more likely in women than in men. And there is debate as to what causes them; environmental factors, diet, changes in the nervous system or changes in vascular blood flow. Migraine sufferers are at a two- to three-fold greater risk for having a stroke.

Migraine symptoms can be controlled with medications such as Ibuprofen, acetaminophen, Naproxen, etc. However, many people would like to address the root of their migraine issues, so they can get off their medication and live pain-free.

One such patient is the following. A 37 year old female, in a highly stressful job. Her migraines came about once or twice a week, and lasted for about two days. During a typical month she missed one or two days of work due to the pain. The pain would start as a tension in the back of the head and progress to the temples, usually on one side or the other. She had a few of the other symptoms that are associated with migraines. In her case some nausea, and sensitivity to light and noise.

I gave her nutritional and lifestyle recommendations, and put her on an herbal formula specifically designed for her. After the first week of treatment nothing much changed. But on the second week the patient noticed that she had gone the whole week without a headache. She had had a "sensation as if the headache wanted to start" but it never did. She is now on week seven, with only one mild headache after a stressful work event. Her overall health and wellness continue to improve, and she has much more hope and joy in living her life.

Like this patient, I have helped others with their migraines through careful diagnosis and a clear protocol. The time it takes to get migraines under control varies. There are better days and worse days, just like with anything in life. Some people respond within the first month, others take three months or more. However, during that time, their symptoms begin to improve, and with that the quality of life also improves.

If you, or someone you know, suffer(s) from migraines make an appointment for a Case Review consultation (in-person or via remote tele-consultation). You will receive a detailed medical history form to fill out before the consult. During the consultation we will go over your case, migraine history and general health status. With that I will make a diagnosis, generate a specific treatment protocol, make lifestyle recommendations, and prescribe herbs and/or supplements.

Quick tip: Some people are highly sensitive to food additives and preservatives. These may trigger migraine headaches. Likely triggers include: sulfites (preserved fruits, wine), nitrates and nitrites (cured meats), monosodium glutamate (MSG: flavor enhancing food additive, broadly used in prepared foods), and artificial flavors. Ask before you eat!
